Award winning live music in La Grange
Wesley’s Place Live Music Venue offers an acoustic evening starring Lone Canary and Dan Maguire at 7 p.m. July 10 in the chapel at First United Methodist Church of La Grange, 100 W. Cossitt Ave.
Maguire, a singer-songwriter, hails from a musical family in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His music eventually evolved into original rock and roll, and his 2023 album “Travelin’ Light,” led him to win Album of the year from the Rockford Area Music Industry Awards.
The award-winning duo Lone Canary is made up of Jesse Fox and Heather Camacho, who are inspired by Jason Isbell, The Civil Wars, Watchhouse and others. The evening’s host, folk singer-songwriter Mark Dvorak, will perform an opening set.

Free ice pops, park walk set in Franklin Park
Families are invited to “pop” over to the Pool on Pacific, 9715 Pacific Ave., to cool off with a free ice pop from 1 to 4 p.m. July 12, thanks to the Park District of Franklin Park.
There’s a limit of one per person while supplies last.
People of all ages can join Walk the Park from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 14 in North Park, 10040 Addison Ave., before the summer concert 7 to 9 p.m. when Classical Blast performs.
Participants can stroll on the walking path. For every lap completed, a raffle entry for prizes is earned.

Area students named Chisox Athletes
The Chicago White Sox named 12 new Chisox Athletes from NCAA Division I student-athletes, and area residents were among them.
The group includes Benet Academy graduate Lenee Beaumonth, of Lisle, who plays for Indiana University’s women’s basketball team, and Hinsdale South High School graduate Billy Gneiser, of Darien, who plays on the men’s golf team at DePaul University.
The program, in its fifth season, engages student-athletes in “organizationally supported community initiatives, content creation and brand-building opportunities,” per a news release. This year United Airlines joined as a presenting sponsor.
Nazareth Academy hosts graduation

The graduating class at Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park held its commencement ceremony and graduation Mass at Christ Church in Oak Brook.
The students earned $50 million in merit scholarship offers, and those who are pursuing higher education were accepted at 81 different colleges across 24 states and four countries.
The class has 40 Illinois State Scholars, two National Merit Commended Scholars, Mark Rovano and Roxanne Stasch, and one National Merit Finalist, Samuel Wilda. Roxanne Stasch earned the school’s highest recognition for service and unity in her class with the Sr. Oliver Donlin Award, and Landon Thome, Stella Sakalas and Trenton Walker were named athletes of the year.
The Elizabeth Anne Rimkus Memorial Scholarship for the Arts went to Alexa De La Cerda; Kelli Joy O’Laughling Scholarship to Elena Garcia; Lisa Marie Santoro Foundation Scholarship to Bea Keenan; American Legion School Awards to Hannah Ereio and John Siffermann; Wise Men Prairie Tail Service Award to Arabella Elliott and West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry Scholarship to Carson Ryan.
Library in Western Springs hosts cookbook swap
Anyone who needs new recipe ideas is invited to participate in a cookbook swap this month at the Thomas Ford Memorial Library, 800 Chestnut St. in Western Springs.
During library hours through July 31, participants can bring in a gently loved cookbook – without stains or food on them – to the Adult Services Department to swap for a new cookbook. Details are at 708-246-0520.
Shakespeare Under the Stars set at MVCC
Moraine Valley Community College will continue its tradition of hosting a free outdoor William Shakespeare play, and the 22nd season of Shakespeare Under the Stars features “Richard III” at 7 p.m. July 16 to 18 and at 5 p.m. July 19 on the Gateway, between buildings F and M on the main campus, 9000 W. College Parkway in Palos Hills.
The play features Richard, duke of Gloucester, who wants to ascend the throne at any cost and isn’t afraid to kill to do so. Area residents from throughout the Chicago area are cast in the show.
Attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on. They may bring food but alcohol and smoking are prohibited. Those who must smoke should do so inside their vehicle.
If it rains or is extremely hot, the show will be moved inside Building F. Details are at 708-974-5500.
