Caroline Kennedy is revealing more about the state of affairs in her storied family.
In a statement to New York magazine, the daughter of former President John F. Kennedy noted that her family, known for its long history in American politics, has shifted.
Caroline's comments come nearly seven months after she issued uncharacteristically scathing claims about her cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — also known as Bobby — ahead of his confirmation hearing for health secretary.
“Just to state the obvious though it seems often underweighted these days — there are now more than 100 adults in our family so it’s pretty different than in the past,” she told the magazine.
Caroline's statement reinforced the "warning" that New York writer Reeves Wiedeman received about "trying to analyze the family as a cohesive unit" in today's age, per the article, which was published in the Aug. 25 issue.

The Kennedy family legacy of the former president — as well as RFK Sr., Ted, Jackie, and Ethel — saw a fairly public fracture when Bobby set his sights on politics in recent years.
Members of the modern Kennedy family, most of whom have aligned with the Democratic Party, have distanced themselves from Bobby (now a figure in President Donald Trump's administration) and denounced him as unfit to serve in public office.

Less than 24 hours before Bobby's first confirmation hearing to become Trump's health secretary, Caroline issued a bombshell video statement on Jan. 28 about her cousin's character, and why she believed he was unqualified to lead U.S. health policy.
In the rare statement, Caroline referenced Bobby's history of drug addiction, detailed an alleged pattern of gruesome animal abuse, and accused him of exploiting the "desperation of parents of sick children" by advocating against science-backed vaccines.
In addition, Caroline said, Bobby "continues to grandstand" off of the tragic Kennedy assassinations in the 1960s and takes advantage of his family's famous name.

“It’s incomprehensible to me that someone who is willing to exploit his own painful family tragedies for publicity would be put in charge of America’s life and death situations,” she said.
“Unlike Bobby, I try not to speak for my father, but I am certain that he and my uncle Bobby, who gave their lives in public service to this country, and my uncle Teddy, who devoted his long Senate career to the cause of improving health care, would be disgusted.”

After Caroline's statement, a Kennedy family insider told PEOPLE that there's always been a touchy dynamic between JFK's daughter and the many children of RFK, noting that Caroline's attack merely brought the tension to the surface.
"I think Caroline and [John F. Kennedy Jr.] were always first among unequals," the source said, "and the RFK kids were always tagging at their heels."
The source added that, with the modern Kennedy family "in tatters," Caroline, 67, and Bobby, 71, have found themselves the two remaining figureheads of their generation.
"Bobby Jr. basically wanted to be Caroline, but he never had the discipline, the gravitas or the intelligence or the discretion to do any of that," the source claimed.

While Caroline — a U.S. diplomat who has served as the ambassador to both Japan and Australia — has largely remained reserved in the public eye, Bobby has been known to frequently weigh in on controversial topics and walk himself into a corner at times (such as during his first confirmation hearing, when he was questioned about his flip-flopping stances on some issues).
After seeing Caroline break her longtime pattern of silence in a failed attempt to keep her cousin out of government, PEOPLE's source said that the Kennedy family is no longer what many Americans remember.
"I tend to think the pages turn," the insider said. "[Caroline] has never spoken publicly about anything in her 60 years, and she comes out with this. The only time Jackie spoke out was the preservation of Grand Central. That's how rarely these people speak up."
